A Bordetella vaccine cost between $30 and $100 across 46 eligible New York City price observations in Vetted's current dataset. The observed median was $64.30, based on prices from 40 clinics.

That figure covers the vaccine itself. A clinic may also charge for a veterinarian's exam, a technician appointment or other services, so the total appointment cost can run higher than the vaccine line item alone.

This guide is a companion to Vetted's broader look at dog vaccine costs in NYC, which covers rabies, DHPP, leptospirosis and Lyme alongside Bordetella. Here, we're taking a closer look at what Vetted's data shows specifically for Bordetella.

Queens data remains thin. Vetted has only two eligible observations there, at $30 and $75, which isn't enough to calculate a responsible borough median, so we're not presenting a Queens figure yet. The dataset doesn't currently support a meaningful Bronx comparison either.

Brooklyn and Manhattan, a closer look

Despite a $70 spread between the lowest and highest observed NYC prices, the Brooklyn and Manhattan medians land within about a dollar and a half of each other. That's a narrower gap than the price range found within either borough on its own.

That doesn't mean location has no effect on price. The clinics behind Brooklyn's 33 observations aren't the same as the clinics behind Manhattan's 11, and neither sample is a controlled study of how borough alone affects price. It's simply what Vetted's current data shows, and it may shift as more prices come in.

What is Bordetella?

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium that contributes to canine infectious respiratory disease, sometimes called kennel cough. The vaccine is used to help protect dogs against it.

Boarding facilities, daycares, groomers and similar businesses often ask for proof of Bordetella vaccination before admitting a dog, though requirements vary by facility. Check with wherever you board or drop off your dog for its specific policy, and talk to your veterinarian about what's appropriate for your dog.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association's 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines, Bordetella vaccines come in injectable, oral and intranasal forms, and the available research doesn't show these routes to be simply interchangeable in how well they work. Product and administration differences may help explain some of the price variation Vetted observed. This isn't a recommendation about which formulation to choose; that's a question for your veterinarian.

Does the Bordetella price include the vet visit?

The $30-to-$100 figures above represent the vaccine line item itself, wherever Vetted could separate it from other charges on a bill. Depending on the clinic, the complete appointment cost may also include:

  • A routine veterinary exam

  • A technician appointment

  • Other vaccines

  • A medical-waste or disposal fee

  • Preventive testing

  • Medications or other services

Not every clinic charges all of these, and billing structures vary. Before booking, it can help to ask:

  • Does the quoted price include the appointment fee?

  • Can the vaccine be given during a technician visit?

  • Which Bordetella product or formulation is included?

  • Are any additional fees added to the vaccine charge?

  • Is a booster or additional dose expected?

These are billing and budgeting questions, not medical advice.

Methodology

Vetted analyzed 46 eligible Bordetella vaccine prices from 40 NYC clinics. These observations come from submitted veterinary bills and other eligible clinic-price research, not from an official price list or fee schedule.

Where possible, Vetted compares prices at the line-item level, isolating the vaccine charge from other services on the same bill. This dataset is not a complete survey of every NYC clinic, and the current sample is concentrated in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Products, administration methods, appointment structures and included services can all differ between clinics, so treat these figures as observed prices, not quotes or guarantees.
